THE CAUSEWAY TO LINDISFARNE
Causeway Crossing, approximately 3 miles
The walk across the sandy/silty causeway is a magical and spiritual experience. The tide times must be checked prior to using this crossing – there are boards at the start of the crossing displaying the tide times and safe times to cross.
Lindisfarne Castle and Walled Garden
The 16th century castle is built on a high shoreline rock, its distinct and breathtaking features can be seen for miles. It was bought in 1901 by Edward Hudson who commissioned Sir Edwin Lutyens to convert it into a residence for him. The walled garden a short distance from the castle was designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1911. The castle and garden are now managed by the National Trust.
Lindisfarne Priory
In beautiful surroundings and managed by English Heritage, the ruins of the Priory on Lindisfarne date from the early 12thcentury when Norman monks from Durham cathedral founded a new community there. St Cuthbert and the Lindisfarne Gospels are linked with the Priory.
There is much to explore in this very special place – a fitting ending to the Forth to Farne Way.
